Fabulous PDC Infrastructure

Saravana Kumar writes "... When I saw the email from CSDeveloper competition chair saying my DVD is corrupted and asking me to send it by email or another copy of DVD, I was in panic attack... All I had is my laptop with all the files (around 20MB), funny bit is I left my power adapter in the hotel thinking I have enough power to check my email whole day. Ok, now I need to do something drastic..."

PDC05 Show Off Videos Posted

Michael Swanson writes "Thanks to everyone who submitted a video for our first-ever Show Off event at PDC05. We had 25 total submissions, and we had time to show 22 of them at Thursday night's 2-hour event. You can find all of the submitted videos on Channel 9 under the showoff tag. Please leave comments and feedback for each video so we know what to look for next time. Interestingly enough, because ..."

PDC Birds of a Feather Forums

Steven Smith writes "I was lucky enough to attend a few Birds of a Feather sessions at PDC05, including one hosted by Julia Lerman on Going Solo. At many of these, the time goes by very quickly and many of the attendees have additional questions for the host or for one another that must go unanswered. Further communication is usually limited to a few hastily exchanged business cards, but the group itself disintegrates within moments of the end of the session. Well, in answer to this... "

Pro VB2005. Didn't know it was orderable yet

Kent Sharkey writes "While I tend to feel I am somewhat language agnostic, I have worked on Visual Basic books related to every version of VB from 4.0 to 2005 (with the exception of 2003). It seems the latest (small contribution, with a bad cover photo according to Bill) can now be ordered. Wonder if it will ..."

Debugging Web Applications using Web Development Helper

Nikhil Kothari writes "...The tool is implemented as an Internet Explorer browser helper object. When installed, it provides a console window at the bottom on the IE window, and can be launched using the View | Explorer Bar, or Tools menu. This is a pet project that I work on during my spare time. It started as a tool scoped to ASP.NET scenarios, but has evolved into something that targets Web applications in general. A number of features described below are ... "

Debating Our Rules Engine

Richard Seroter writes "If you're someone deeply interested in rule engine algorithms, and specifically Microsoft's implementation of the Rete algorithm in the Rules Engine that ships with BizTalk Server 2004, then you absolutely must read this facinating study by Charles Young. Charles also talks about some of the background of the debate around our implementation here. I shake my fist at you, Charles, for forcing me to spend 2 hours on a sunny Saturday reading about rules engines! Such interesting stuff. "

Reflecting on the WCF Messaging Paradigm

Larry Beck writes "Thanks to Matt Joe we met at the Ask the Experts session Thursday night and we had an interesting discussion regarding the WCF "messaging paradigm". It came up in the context of a discussion regarding the Service Activity Generator. One of my positioning statements for this utility is that many developers don't want to - or need to - think about the messaging infrastructure that the WCF declarative model hides under the covers. Steve, on the other hand, said that the product team is actually re-thinking this model and may want to have the developer be exposed to more of the messaging paradigm. Consider the following approach: "

New Whitepaper: Introduction to Building Windows Communication Foundation Services

Richard Turner writes "I am very happy to announce the immediate availability of a new whitepaper: "Introduction to Building Windows Communication Foundation Services" written by the inestimable Clemens Vasters. In this paper, Clemens takes us on a trip through WCF introducing the very simplest concepts first and gradually adding more features and capabilities, illustrating many of the facets of WCF ... including the fact that WCF can be used for remote-invocation or message-based systems. "

LINQ Designer Receives Prestigious Award at PDC

Matt Warren writes "In the wake and fanfare of the disclosure of the LINQ technology preview at the PDC 2005 in Los Angeles this last week, a member of the LINQ design team was presented with a prestigious award for outstanding achievement above and beyond his peers. Erik Meijer, most known for his antics as "Head in the Box" for VB TV and author of many research and academic papers such as "Programming with Circles, Triangles, Rectangles and other 3rd grade geometry", was surprised to find himself the award’s recipient. “The competition was pretty tough,” he was heard to say as he was lead off stage. “I had no ..."

Must-own book

Miguel de Icaza writes "The new book from Brad Abrams and Krzysztof Cwalina: Framework Design Guidelines : Conventions, Idioms, and Patterns for Reusable .NET Libraries is a must-have book for anyone writing .NET and Mono code. I got my copy at the PDC this week and it is a wonderful book. The book includes many of the design guidelines that Brad's blog is famous for. The book is not just a collection of rules, but it also includes... "

Trying to install Windows Vista on VPC

Johan Danforth writes "As everyone else on the PDC, I got a PDC-version of Windows Vista. I tried to install in on a VPC yesterday, but I never got past the install step where you have to specify on what disk to install to. I tried (within VPC) to delete the virtual partition and format it, but it never got available. I wonder if anyone else experienced the same problem... "
