Preferred Hotel for the PDC - Wilshire Grand

TechEd 2005 is over, and now is the time to start thinking about PDC05, which will be held in Los Angeles, September 13th-16th.  The PDC has been in the same location the last 2 times (2001 and 2003), and my favorite hotel is the Wilshire Grand.  In 2003 the Wilshire was the place to stay, and I can’t find a reason to switch hotels.  The prime feature was a nice hotel bar, which had a small alcove off from the main bar.  A bunch of us used this alcove as a nice area to sit and hangout, without having to shout over music or crowd noise.  They also have a decent selection of beer (major bonus).

I don’t know how many people from the PDC03 crew I hung out with will be there this time, but even if only half of them show up, it will still be a rocking time.  Drew Marsh has already posted that he signed up for the conf and will be staying at the Wilshire.

The PDC starts on a Tuesday, which is kind of weird, with precons on the Sunday and Monday prior.  I have to leave before the last day (to get back East in time for my sister’s wedding), so I’m not sure when I plan to fly out, yet.  I didn’t really see any precons that I’d be interested in, but I’m sure we can hold our own in the lounge of the Wilshire.

The Wilshire looked great on the website. Do you just take the metro to the Conference Center? Or just go on foot?

All PDC hotels will have bus service to the convention center (at least that is the way it has been at every MSFT convention I've been to, but I can't confirm this on the PDC05 site at the moment). But, it is a short (in terms of how big the convention center is) walk to the convention center from the hotel. If you went to TechEd, it isn't any farther then the distance from the Peabody to the Orange County Convention Center. Most of the downtown hotels are within walking distance to the conf center (well, I guess that is really dependent on how bad the smog is, some days just walking outside the hotel is too far to walk in that smog).

It would be great if they had the detailed agenda posted. I would like to get my flight and make hotel reservations, but need to know when things start/end so I can determine how long I will be there.

In order to get a room in the better hotels, you need to book the conference soon. If you don't care what hotel you stay in, then it isn't as big of a deal. What I do is book the conference and the hotel I want, for the max number of days. I can always go back and reduce the number of days in the hotel, but it isn't always easy to add days (and it doesn't cost anything to change). As for the flights, I usually book them closer to the event, since it usually costs to change your flight.

About donxml

I’m an independent consultant, specializing in .Net solutions architecture, based out of New Jersey who also doubles as an evangelist for XML, Domain Driven Design, enterprise architecture and .Net. I do not work for Microsoft, the W3C or any other big company that you may know of (at least not yet). I’ve been an indie for over ten years, and although I’ve been tempted a couple times to take a job with companies like Microsoft, I’ve haven’t found something better than my current situation. I work mostly with the large pharmaceuticals that are based here in New Jersey, and usually find myself on long term contracts. Definitely not the prototypical indie consultant, but it lets me dedicate time to my non-income generating activities like the developer community stuff, plus financing open source projects like XPathmania and MVP-XML. If you would like to talk to me about doing some contract work, just contact me via the contact page. My rates vary widely, depending on lots of different variables, but mostly distance from Jersey, and type of work. Plus, I’ve been known to donate some of my code for various projects.
